about

An imaginary conversation with Beatrice de Cardi, OBE, FSA, FBA (1914 – 2016) acclaimed and pioneering archeologist in the region of the United Arab Emirates most active in field work the 1960 until she was 93, who was alive at the time of performance (now deceased RIP).

De Cardi discovered distinctive pottery at sites near the Bampur River which led to a new understanding of the nature of trade links in the Persian Gulf region in the Bronze Age. She also carried out work in the Persian Gulf, and launched a number of expeditions in the United Arab Emirates that yielded the first examples of Ubaid pottery in the region. In this time she also discovered more than 20 tombs from the second millennium B.C.

The performer begins singing from a balcony above the entrance to the art fair, and then takes a lift down to join two untrained singers who push her through the fair on a luggage trolley, towards a sound installation on a staircase. The installation features a hand made sculpture of a fallen piece of mosque ceiling (muqarnas), in a reverberant staircase. The melody and lyrics begin to decompose as the journey goes on, until in the staircase, the two untrained voices and the opera singer join together in tones.

The context is the Art Dubai fair, the largest commercial art fair in the Middle East, where much of the audience will not be aware of the performance's meaning or origin, as it was an intervention. Still,. many did not even look up from their mobile phone screens.
